Building for the Future with local schools partnership

 Back News - - 1 minute read.

Dundee primary school pupils are building their own futures thanks to a donation from Dundee Science Centre.

St Mary’s Primary School in Dundee has received some construction themed toys including foam bricks and blocks, builder dress-up outfits and a new outdoor storage unit as part of the Explore Your Universe: Valuing Inclusion project, led and funded by the Association for Science and Discovery Centres (ASDC).

The project aids community partners in creating meaningful science engagement experiences for children and families from disadvantaged backgrounds. As well as holding ‘Our World From Space’ sessions at the primary school, the Science Centre team has attended the school’s careers and family fun days, with pupils returning to Centre to   enjoy more activities, including the Easter holiday Space Camp.

Caitlin MacInnes, STEM Development Lead at Dundee Science Centre, said “At the end of the project, we asked the school what supplies or resources they would need to continue the STEM learning they’ve been doing with us, and they chose to set up a construction kit.  We’re so pleased that

they’re taking their STEM learning forward following our approach to hands-on learning. The kit will give the pupils an opportunity to explore engineering, maths and different materials through lots of imaginative play and challenges set by their teachers. We hope it will give them inspiration to apply the skills they develop to the world around them.” – Caitlin MacInnes.

Tara Godfrey, Primary 4 teacher at St Mary’s, stated “This is something that our children love to play with when they visit the science centre, so it just made sense to have this legacy piece from our partnership f

or the children, and they’re having a great time. It’s so good that we can do this and provide our kids with such a great group of toys that they can get creative with”.
