Science Fun for Dundee Families

 Back News - - 2 minute read.

Over 90 children and their families enjoyed a free science fun day in Dundee!

The in-service day event, hosted by the Children and Families Service of West End Campus was held in partnership with Dundee Science Centre and Dundee Bairns. The Science Centre team wowed visitors with an interactive STEM session focused on engineering challenges we will face in the future and the innovations being developed to address these. Pupils enjoyed hands-on activities and challenges centred around sustainability, electrical engineering, construction and renewable energy, using Minecraft building blocks, creating electrical connections and snap circuits.

Jill Farrell, CEO of Dundee Science Centre, said, “It was amazing to see so many local families turn up for yesterday’s fun day and to see the children enjoy some ‘school’s out’ science fun with their parents, carers and friends. Dundee Science Festival’s ‘Visions of the Future’ theme gave us so many opportunities for engaging, hands-on activities that challenged children and families to use their imaginations, think big and get stuck into some serious problem-solving!”

Susan Maxwell, Programme and Volunteer Coordinator at Dundee Bairns, added, “Dundee Bairns was delighted to be involved in this fun, family day. We truly value the relationship we have with the School and Family Development Workers in schools, and this is just another great example of our partnership working in action to benefit Oor Bairns.”

Dundee Science Centre’s role in the event was part of the 15th Dundee Science Festival, which runs until Sunday, 23 February 2025. The festival will reach every corner of Dundee, with nearly 20 outreach events hosted in various community centres, libraries and Baxter Park Pavilion, amongst others. To ensure accessibility to all, 1,000 free tickets were distributed to children and families who may not otherwise have the chance to visit Dundee Science Centre. Dundee Science Centre is also providing science fun at 10 Tea Clubs, held in primary schools across the city in conjunction with Dundee Bairns.

Coinciding with Dundee Science Centre’s 25th anniversary, the festival embraces the theme of ‘Visions of the Future,’ offering visitors of all ages the chance to engage with hands-on experiments, demonstrations and thought-provoking workshops. The final weekend will see a show-stopping finale at Dundee Science Centre, with the chance to explore a virtual reality underwater world, play with optical illusions, explore our brilliant brains and discover how the human body works through virtual reality.

This year’s festival is made possible thanks to contributions from a range of new and returning partners, including Abertay University, Eden Project, The Art and Nature Collective, RSPB, Stemovators, University of Dundee, Dynamic Earth, Scottish Seabird Centre, Dundee & Angus College, Dundee Astronomical Society, SHARE, Scottish Nature Photography Awards, Woodland Trust, Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science, Cerebral Ape, Boulby Underground Laboratory, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and The Scottish Deer Centre & Wildlife Park.

Dundee Science Festival 2025 is funded by Scottish Government, The Edina Trust and OPITO.
